Redesigning historical buildings for functional transformation and adding contemporary interventions according to the needs of the new function has been on the agenda of architectural practice for a long time. According to the conservation theory, which has continued to develop from the 19th century to the present, the interventions applied to historical buildings are expected to highlight the historical context by preserving it, and to reflect its own character and period by being inspired by the context. It is desired that the authentic features of the existing building shape the new intervention design, and the new design inserts new values and increases the existing values of the historical building. However, the complexity of relations such as harmony and contrast based on historical and contextual data makes the redesign of
historical buildings a very problematic process, and architects need to use an architectural strategy that guides their design in order to establish a two-way interaction and connection between the old and the new. One of these strategies, which is determined according to the relationship established between the tangible and intangible authentic qualities of the host structure and the elements that contain the requirements of the new function, is the insertion strategy. It is one of the most remarkable approaches in contemporary interventions. In this approach, the host structure remains majorly unchanged, and the quality of the space differs with the addition of new element(s) inspired by it. The new addition can be addressed in a wide range between adjusting to the original design and completely differentiating, and both approaches are accepted provided that they do not harm the historical context. For this reason, the aim of this thesis is to investigate how authentic qualities and contextual data should be used in the design process in the insertion strategy. In this context, first of all, the conservation theory discussions related to the conservation and interventions to historical buildings, the expansions in international
charters and documents containing principles were reviewed in chronological order, the views of remarkable theorists and contemporary intervention studies from Carlo Scarpa to the present day were examined. Then, the selected intervention design projects were examined and the diversity in intervention approaches was presented and evaluated in terms of conservation theory, and the success of the selected projects was analyzed within the framework of the parameters related to conservation and design.

Thesis Advisor: PROF.(PhD) HAVVA MELTEM GÜREL
Urban interiors are places that people use as common spaces to carry on everyday activities such as eating, drinking, and socializing. In these spaces, such activities flow into the streets blurring the boundaries between the inside and the outside space. In this respect, urban interiors are important in bringing users together at the intersection of urban and interior space while offering spaces that allow users to socialize. The thesis conceptualizes spaces between buildings as urban voids in connection to the notions of interiority, public interiors, and blurring boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The site of the study is İzmir’s Basmane district, which is chosen within the scope of more differentiated in socio-cultural terms, especially with migration, and has caused quite different discussions in terms of architecture and urban characteristics which ensure diverse voids. In the context of its current conditions, Basmane is a part of the city that cannot integrate with the rest of the city due to the changing social and physical dynamics over time. The study firstly made a literature review on the concept of urban interior space. Then, a solid-void analysis is made to define the urban interior spaces. With the sketches and photographs produced after the site visits, these urban interiors were examined in two categories according to their physical characteristics and spatial practices. As a result, the practices between buildings with the concept of interiority and the blurring of the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces are examined in the Basmane area.

The fields of architecture and interiors also have an important spatial meeting point with different disciplines such as literature and cinema. Undoubtedly, science fiction works play an important role in architectural cross-section, especially when it comes to future designs. Dealing with the concept of space in relation to time in science fiction works, which generally construct future worlds, is beneficial in creating future spaces. Owing to the past-future and technology-historical style relationship it contains, the cyberpunk genre, which is a science fiction sub-genre, is examined in this study. Richard K. Morgan’s Altered Carbon novel and its web series adaptation, which carries traces of the cyberpunk genre, is analyzed as the case study of the work, since it includes a variety of spatial descriptions. In this framework, the aim of the study is to understand how the technology-history juxtaposition in cyberpunk works can have the potential to guide designers in terms of future designs. The study first discusses the relationship between the concept of space and literature as well as cinema, especially in terms of science fiction genre, and then introduces cyberpunk literature and cinema and makes detailed analyzes of the Altered Carbon novel and web series, which is determined as a case study. In the study, the spatial analyzes of the work are examined under two sub-titles: the urban space, and architecture and interiors. The determined places are first analyzed in detail with the quotes taken from the novel and the images taken from the web series, in terms of technology-history juxtaposition. As a result, the study states that spatial depictions of the cyberpunk genre can be used as a tool while designing the spaces of the future.

The advancement of technology has changed office interiors, as a result of these changes work itself and the way work is done also evolved. During this change, offices, where people spend the majority of their time, are designed with a user-oriented focus to fulfill their needs. On the other hand, the concept of flexible working gained importance, and home-office and remote working approaches quickened the transition to shared workplaces. Later, the negative impacts of home-office and remote working concepts on employees were observed, the kicking off the process of transition to shared workplaces.
According to the literature, having control over the interior has a positive effect on user performance and well-being in coworking spaces, where the number of users and spaces is increasing by the day. The aim of the thesis is to analyze users’ satisfaction in terms of control in coworking spaces. The concept of control studied by Evans & McCoy (1998) was used as a framework. Through literature, the control-related interior design factors have been identified as; flexibility, IEQ, privacy, and territoriality and these factors were used to analyze users’ satisfaction. Within the scope of the study, a survey was conducted with the users of selected space: Originn Coworking Offices situated in Izmir. Managers were also interviewed, and their views and user feedbacks were questioned. It is anticipated that the findings will aid professionals in the design and construction of shared office spaces that would satisfy user expectations, the development of current shared office spaces, and the design of these facilities.
Key Words: Shared workplace, coworking space, user satisfaction, the issue of control, coworking space design.

Thesis Advisor: ASSOC.PROF.(PhD) ZEYNEP TUNA ULTAV
Comics, as a visual medium, have always had a close relationship with architecture to display its fictional spaces through the concepts of utopia and dystopia. While studies relating to superhero comics are not recent, the number of studies focusing on the fictional spaces on comics are relatively low. The aim of this research is to establish comics as a fruitful source for research on fictional space in the framework of utopia and dystopia. The case of study of this thesis, Marvel’s X-Men comics, a science fiction superhero story, utilizes these concepts to represent the architectural spaces of the story. This thesis analyzes X-Men story arcs (The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, House of X and Powers of X) from three different years, 1980, 1981 and 2019. Analyzing these years allows to understand utopian and dystopian fictional spaces and how they changed over time while also searching for the legitimization of X-Men comics as an efficient resource to analyze these concepts. To conduct the analysis, the topics of fictional spaces, utopia and dystopia are investigated. Fictional spaces of comics are crucial resources to analyze architecture with different concepts such as utopia and dystopia. They also include important architectural styles from different time periods. As a result, it is possible to state that the comics medium offers many fictional spaces that features utopian and dystopian features which makes it an effective medium to analyze fictional spaces.

Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF.(PhD) N. EBRU KARABAĞ
One of the most hotly debated topics in conservation is the use of modern interventions in historic structures. In this process, these interventions are expected to encounter various conditions for their success and acceptance. Only when these conditions are provided can the intervention enrich multiple aspects of the historic structure such as; social, economic, and visual character. These interventions affect not only individual structures but their surroundings as well. In order to set base guidelines for contemporary interventions in historic textures, many international and national documents were prepared by various theoreticians and active organizations in the fields. However, each case of conservation and intervention carries a specific character that necessitates individual approaches.
Facadism, a practice where the exterior of the structure is given more importance than the interior, which creates a divorce between the outer and inner parts, is one of the most popular developing architectural approaches of recent years has been harshly criticized over the years. However, the development and appearance of this practice continue. Adaptive reuse projects are also known to utilize this strategy in recent years. In this case, it is essential to have a more comprehensive understanding of facadism to develop ideas regarding its negative and positive aspects.
This study explored facadism practice as an adaptive reuse strategy within the framework of heritage conservation principles mentioned in the documents prepared by international organizations. With the help of these documents of UNESCO and ICOMOS, five key parameters were generated. Furthermore, with the developed facadism typologies, contemporary facadism is simplified to broaden the common understanding of the topic. As case studies, ten contemporary adaptive reuse projects where facadism can be observed were selected from various locations and typologies and analyzed based on the mentioned parameters. The effect of the context on conservation and design understanding is reflected by the examples and the potential of facadism as a successful strategy for re-functioning historic structures.

Thesis Title: THE ENHANCEMENT OF CASTLE RUINS WITH CONTEMPORARY ADDITIONS AS AN ADAPTIVE REUSE INTERVENTIONS
Author: Talat Taylan Küçükali
Year: 2022
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF.(PhD) N. EBRU KARABAĞ
Structures which, for various reasons, can no longer perform their original function should not be sacrificed, even if they are subject to severe wear and even if they are now in ruins. This recovery can be achieved by giving the structure in question a new function that serves today. These interventions, implemented under the name of adaptive reuse, have brought along some consensuses and dissidence that can be called methods, strategies, approaches or principles among the members of the disciplines that are the addressees of preservation, which may be referred to as methods, strategies, approaches, or principles. While these ideas sometimes involve a general understanding of design, at some specific points they have become classifications that guide or limit the form and dose of intervention.
Castles, which are ancient defensive structures, cannot retain their original function today and are being destroyed by natural and human factors. Conservation examples of these structures, which have a high quality of historical documents and a high potential for visitation, are rarely encountered today. However, castle ruins, with their location and picturesque features, are structures that have the potential for adaptive reuse even in the simplest of ruins. Today there are examples of contemporary interventions that have succeeded in exploiting this potential, preserving the ruined texture and value of the building and respecting its historical layers.
This study explains the emergence of ideas that can be considered theoretically important in the context of conservation and adaptive reuse, as well as their relationships to each other, and reduces the concepts of conservation and adaptive reuse to the specifics of castle ruins. The recently implemented Szatmáry Castle (Hungary), Castelo Novo Castle (Portugal), Tossa de Montbui Castle (Spain), Pombal Castle (Portugal), Doria Castle (Italy) and Morella Castle (Spain) adaptive reuse projects analyzed within the framework of the abovementioned strategies and approaches. Finally, in the light of these compiled examples and approaches, proposals for the adaptive reuse of the castle ruins of Selçuk Keçi Castle (Turkey) are presented.

Thesis Title: HARMONICAL CONTRAST DESIGN APPROACH IN HISTORICAL URBAN CONTEXT
Author: Çağan Demir
Year: 2021
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF.(PhD) N. EBRU KARABAĞ
The new building in the historical environment is one of the important research, discussion, and application topics of architectural practice. The debates emerged with the discourses of modern architecture and developed until today with the help of other architectural movements. When today’s applications are examined, various approaches draw attention. These are reflectivity, interpretation of historical values, analogical and contrast approaches. Although the contrast approach has the potential to reflect the designer’s self in the best way and to increase the interest in the historical building, good contrast designs cannot be made for various reasons. One of the most important of these reasons is that the context has intangible features beyond being a physical object, these features are not adequately perceived and interpreted by the designers, and the visual integrity of the new building is not evaluated at the city scale. In international texts on conservation theory, the context is generally treated as a purely physical fit. These problems cause unsuccessful examples and cause historical environments to lose their original qualities. Therefore, this study focuses on harmonious contrast design approaches. The study aims to provide a better understanding of harmonious contrast design by architects. In this context, in the light of the principles of conservation theory, contrast design examples that have attracted attention in historical city centers in the world in recent years have been examined and evaluated. As a result of the evaluation, it is seen that the harmonious contrast designs differ from the historical building with their form and material properties, and they harmonize with their color and scale characteristics. In addition, it has been determined that the color selection of harmonious contrasting designs increases the similarity with historical buildings by choosing the colors found in the historical context. On the other hand, it was concluded that choosing colors suitable for the historical context in harmonious contrasting designs increase the harmony of the buildings with the historical context while ensuring the separation of the historical building.

Thesis Title: POETRY IN SPATIAL RESEARCH: THE CONCEPT OF ALIENATION WITHIN THE DOMESTIC SPACES OF MODERNISM IN THE SECOND NEW POETRY
Author: Büşra Aydın
Year: 2021
Thesis Advisor: ASSOC.PROF.(PhD) ZEYNEP TUNA ULTAV
Architecture and interiors interact with different disciplines in terms of creating a more comprehensive perspective on space. In this context, the relationship between literature and architectural spaces comes to the fore. When the literary work is read with an architectural awareness, it provides impressions and information about the features of the space and its effects on the users. Poetry, which is a literary genre, should also be seen as an important resource in the context of references and impressions it provides about space. References to architectural and interior images in poetry through describing spaces are important resources for readers and designers to understand the atmosphere of the period depicted. Human experiences are related to the everyday experience of space, with the relationship between literature and architecture playing an important role. Understanding the atmosphere of a period and spaces of the period such as city, street, or interior space and also through literary texts offers different perspectives for the architects/interior architects and readers. In order to understand the relationship between poetry and space, and the place of poetry in spatial research; the Second New poetry in Turkish poetry is especially suitable to be selected as a case study. The Second New poets adopt an understanding of poetry intertwined with the interior spaces and the city. They consider the views of the modern individual, who faces the effects of modernism. Their works have significance in terms of the opportunity to understand and explain space with the reflections of its period and made its poems rich with regard to using space. Within this context, the aim of the study is to show that poetry is an efficient tool for the body of knowledge of architecture and interiors in order to better understand the relation between poetry and space and to reveal this by looking at the concept of alienation within the domestic spaces as a consequence of modernism. During the modernization process in the twentieth century, society and living spaces in which individuals belong have changed, and most importantly, domestic spaces are also included in this transformation. These transformations affected users of space, not only physically but also psychologically. Changes in the most private spaces of individuals also revealed an alienation to space. The reflections of this situation are put forward through the meanings of spaces depicted in poetry and their imageries. Within this context, the works of the Second New poetry, selected as the case study, provide a significant opportunity to understand and explain spaces that reflect the modernization period in Turkey. The following Second New poets were chosen for this aim: İlhan Berk, Edip Cansever, Turgut Uyar, Sezai Karakoç, Cemal Süreya, Ece Ayhan, and Ülkü Tamer. The way of representing the domestic space and its elements in various states is interpreted in the works of these poets to determine the ways, in which the domestic spaces and its elements are handled in poetry and the meanings they attribute. In this study, analyzing poetic depictions of domestic spaces in these poems are asserted to be useful for understanding the effect of modernism on domestic spaces and users. At the same time, it is suggested that the analyses made on poems as a literary genre can be used as a method in a wider scope such as theory and education areas for the disciplines of architecture and interiors.

Architectural spatial cues are crucial to literature, but the extent to which they are incorporated in architectural theory discourse is limited. The aim of this study is to reveal the correlation between architecture and literature through analyzing the socio-spatial influences of department stores, which is accomplished by using Émile Zola’s novel, The Ladies’ Paradise (1883), as a case study. This novel was selected to illustrate the interrelatedness between architecture and literature because the literary space portrayed within The Ladies’ Paradise governs the narrative; thus, bringing the narrative forward through the use of architectural literary spaces. The study was achieved by the use of qualitative research methods, of them being, architectural literary analysis. The novel was analyzed within the parameters of the study of that being distinguishing the public space, capitalism, and gender in relation to the architectural space of the department store within the scope of The Ladies’ Paradise. The storyline within The Ladies’ Paradise is dominated with exerts of architectural references thus revealing that public space, capitalism, and gender is correlated with architecture. Therefore, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary perspective of architecture and literature in order to comprehend several issues in architectural theory.

Thesis Title: ARCHITECTURAL PARAMETERS THAT AFFECT ENERGY CONSUMPTION: A SIMULATION BASED CASE STUDY OF A PATIENT ROOM
Author: Süleyman İvgin
Year: 2021
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST. PROF. (PhD) ARZU CILASUN KUNDURACI
The fact that the majority of the human population lives in cities has increased the number of buildings with complex functions. This allowed the buildings to play an active role in energy consumption. Healthcare buildings are one of the most effective building types in energy consumption. These buildings have high-energy consumption due to many reasons such as serving different functions, long occupation hours, medical equipment requirements, providing comfort conditions for people in need of care, and providing an efficient working environment for personnel such as doctors and nurses. Most of the energy used in healthcare buildings is for lighting, heating and cooling systems. The efficiency of these systems varies according to daylight availability. Some environmental and architectural parameters affect the use of daylight in buildings. In this study, one of the most common example single patient room designs on the south façade was simulated using the DALEC software to examine the effects of glazing type, shading system and surface reflectance values of the energy consumed for lighting, heating and cooling using Izmir geographical values. Results are graphically visualized in Kwh/m2 . In the evaluation of eighty different scenarios created, it was found that the architectural parameter that has the most impact in terms of energy efficiency is the interior surface reflection values. The most effective scenario in terms of total energy consumption is the situation where there is no shading in the use of solar low-E glass type in very bright conditions.

Thesis Advisor: ASSIST. PROF. (PhD) BELGİN TERİM ÇAVKA
Disasters around the world are extraordinary situations that are unavoidable for centuries, and humanity is looking for solutions. Disasters on a large scale deeply affect human health, community psychology and the country’s economy. One of the disasters that have an impact around the world is infectious contagious diseases, and these diseases are called pandemics when they affect world communities. Pandemics that negatively affect human health can cause accumulation in hospitals, as they increase the need for treatment. In cases where hospitals can be inadequate at such critical times, the transformation of hospitals becomes of great importance. Covid-19 is the latest pandemic in today’s world that has a global scale impact. In order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and improve the treatment process, interest in hospital/ward design and in-hospital conversions has increased worldwide. Since Covid-19 is not believed to be the final contagious health threat for communities of the world, to examine the available adaptations and derive further planning and design strategies for treatment and well-being areas is crucial to study on. This thesis aims to make constructive suggestions for pandemic processes based on interior space zoning and mechanical ventilation zoning, which can be applied for in-hospital transformations and modular hospital designs. For this purpose, this study focuses on examining the published guidelines (DIN 1946-4, ASHRAE 170-2008, Phoenix Controls Healthcare Sourcebook, Guidelines of The Turkish Ministry of Health) for hospitals in preventing the spread of infection and the studies in the literature, investigating the applicability of modular hospitals designed around the world during Covid-19 pandemic, and explaining the
steps that can be applied in hospital transformations through two private hospital design cases in Turkey. The data in the study were obtained by qualitative (literature review, standards review, as-built document review, on-site observations, and interviews) and quantitative (statistic evaluation of survey analysis, generating variations for case study examples) approaches. Information obtained from literature review, guidelines, and interviews with architects and engineers specializing in hospital design are the basis of the evaluation criteria of this study. As a result, a study has been completed that can play a role in ensuring the consistency of mechanical and interior architectural planning in order to successfully implement hospital transformation practices with the aim of preventing the spread of infections in pandemic processes. Scenarios have been created after all the analysis and synthesis of hospital interiors progressed during Covid-19 pandemic.

Studies conducted within the scope of modern architectural history show that modern design/architecture has emerged with the reflections of different modernization processes experienced in different parts of the world from past to present on residential architecture. Residential architecture is undoubtedly one of the most important building typologies determining the identity and quality of cities. Facades being the most prominent and dominant architectural element that enable the building to express itself have also great importance for residential buildings. Accordingly, interventions on residential buildings which stem from changing demands in the society, urban transformation policies, renovation works, lack of conservation and documentation awareness in the values of building envelopes directly affect the housing facades and this situation has negative consequences in urban, architectural, and interior scales. In order to minimize the damages of this process that will negatively affect the urban and architectural memory for future generations, it is quite important to carry out multi-layered studies that will contribute to the definition, analysis/interpretation, and documentation of housing facades. This thesis, which advocates that housing facades should be considered together with interior spaces, aims to minimize the negative effects of the interventions on the facades on the historical urban fabric, architectural structure of city life, and interior life quality. Within the scope of the thesis, the modernism period of Turkish architecture history has been read through residential facades that contain information about the society, region, period, lifestyle, social/cultural/political/economic values, and architectural approaches. The historical range of the research has been determined as the period of 1950-1980 with reference to the historical processes, breaking points, and developments that have important effects on residential architecture. The analysis, documentation, and interpretation of the apartment buildings with their architectural and interior features, which are the representatives of modern lifestyle and modernist design attitudes, bring a holistic approach to the residential culture of the period. İzmir Karşıyaka Donanmacı District was selected as the case study area which bears the traces of the urban and architectural transformation that Karşıyaka has undergone and which is thought to contain qualified housing stock regarding the historical range of the study. In this context, to be able to analyse the residential facades from different aspects, six apartment blocks were studied in detail, which have significant characteristics in terms of architectural and interior features. The method of the thesis includes literature review, identification of selected case studies, photo shooting, archive scanning, and data digitalizing. The research is also supported by the analysis of “tangible” values obtained as a result of objective data and the “intangible” values resulting from subjective interpretations, specially developed and proposed for residential facades. The proposed tangible and intangible values analysis provides a comprehensive evaluation on six housing facades selected from İzmir-Karşıyaka in the 1950-1980 period. In addition, this thesis contributes documentation containing information, references, and hints on housing facades by investigating housing policy, design culture, and architectural and interior space developments in İzmir Karşıyaka Region.
Key Words: Modern housing heritage, housing architecture and interiors, housing facades, İzmir-Karşıyaka apartment buildings, tangible and intangible values.
Thesis Title: TEMPORARY INTERVENTIONS AS AN ALTERNATIVE ADAPTIVE REUSE TOOL
Author: Özüm Karadağ
Year: 2021
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF. (PhD) N. Ebru KARABAĞ AYDENİZ
Buildings reflect the aesthetic and architectural values of the period, and with their functions, they aim to meet people’s needs. Since cultural heritage conveys cultural and technical information about the history of societies, protecting immovable cultural heritage assets and transferring them to future generations are critical issues for conservation theory and practice. New methods and approaches have been developed in conservation theory and practice. As one of these conservation methods, adaptive reuse ensures the sustainable use of historic buildings according to today’s conditions. Adaptive reuse interventions differ depending on the existing building’s characteristics and the designer’s intervention approach. Changing conservation practices and intervention approaches point to the production of new tools for adaptive reuse. In this study, temporary interventions are examined as a new intervention tool. This study investigated temporary interventions as an adaptive reuse tool within the framework of principles specified in conservation charters published by international councils. In this study, the review of the documents published by UNESCO and ICOMOS helped identify six design parameters, which are “form and structure,” “function and user,” “material, texture and color,” “adaptation,” “protection,” and “sustainability”. As case studies, 12 temporary intervention examples, which are also adaptive reuse projects, were selected and analyzed based on the mentioned six intervention parameters. As a result of the analysis, it was found that temporary interventions could be an adaptive reuse tool that contributes to the preservation of immovable cultural heritage assets with their structural and functional characteristics.

Author: Elif Gündoğdu
Year: 2020
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST. PROF. (PhD) İLKER KAHRAMAN
Natural ventilation is a well-known ventilation methodthat can improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency. This study investigates wind driven cross – ventilation effectiveness for an existing lecture room. A hypothetical window is placed across the windward windows to enhance the effect of cross – ventilation, and the existing windows’ sizes and placement are modified to discern which configuration works best for this lecture room. The study is composed of 17 simulations implemented in computer generated simulation program called ANSYS Fluent. The results present that while inlet and outlet distance do not affect airflow rate when the prevailing force is wind, it is definitely affected by inlet – outlet ratio. The hypothetical window not only improves airflow, but it also creates new air paths inside the space. The study also introduces that window sizes and placement can be designed considering occupant comfort and needs.

Thesis Title: SPATIAL CONSTRUCTIONS OF IDENTITY: ANATOLIAN TAHTACI COMMUNITIES
Author: Selin Güngör
Year: 2020
Thesis Advisor: PROF. (PhD) GÜLSÜM BAYDAR
This thesis scrutinizes the complicated relationship between identity, power and space by means of a critical analysis of the construction of identity and the problem of representation. Contemporary critical theory explains the notion of identity as a social construction, which is manipulated and reproduced according to changing power relations in the social structures. Representations of identity is regarded as quite problematic, especially in the context of collective identity, as it has an erratic structure. Within this theoretical framework, identity construction of Tahtacı community, which has been a minority group in Anatolia, is examined in discursive, institutional, and spatial terms. Contemporary representations of their identity are problematic since the main component of the identity, which is woodworking, is no longer relevant to the community. The main focus of this thesis is on how Tahtacı identity is represented in the absence of its primary category. The analysis on the mutual constructions of space and identity is provided in terms of Tahtacı societies of Western Anatolia, their institutional spaces and the representational tools implicit to these spaces. Providing a critical analysis of the spatial constructions of Tahtacı identity, this study seeks to establish their identity constructions within contemporary theoretical debates on the problem of collective identity representation.

Thesis Title: ANALYSIS OF POST-DISASTER EMERGENCY HOUSING PROJECTS IN TERMS OF INTERIOR SPACE QUALITY PARAMETERS
Author: Muhammad Nisar Ali Mirza
Year: 2020
Thesis Advisor: ASSOC. PROF. (PhD) GÜLNUR BALLİCE
The human needs are far more critical in post-disaster scenarios and the foremost important is usually the emergency housing need for displaced. This study focuses on the taxonomy of interior space quality parameters that address the critical human needs; physical, psychological, and social. The quality of interior space in post-disaster emergency housing has a direct effect on the physical and mental well-being of affected displaced people. The quality of spaces could potentially affect the reintegration of such people who have to live in emergency housing. This study presents a general assessment of post-disaster emergency housing case studies according to space quality parameters that are compiled from the existing literature.
The case studies are selected from recent competition winner projects, distinguished individual design projects, and actual mass-produced products. In this study, after the analysis of current approaches in emergency housing design, guidelines are shaped that are aimed to make living conditions better and sensitive to human well-being. The interior space quality parameters form the basis of assessment criteria. With the assessment of the case studies from different design fields, it is expected to gain insight to improve current design approaches for the victims of mass-displacement and disasters. The identified deficiencies or negligence due to a typical attitude about such projects in terms of critical human needs could be rectified by re-thinking the interior
space with healing characteristics that have the potential to recover the displaced individual’s body and soul.

Thesis Title: EVALUATION OF SUSTAINABILITY OF HIGH RISE BUILDINGS IN IZMIR: MISTRAL TOWERS
Author: Gamze Devran
Year: 2019
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF. (PhD) ECEHAN ÖZMEHMET
Since their existence, people have begun to build high-rise buildings with a desire to go higher, especially under the influence of their religious beliefs.
Today, high rise buildings represent prestige and power from a social perspective. In cities with population density, economically developed and with increasing potential for development every day, higher structures are being built more. As the migration to the city centers increased, land plots to be constructed decreased and therefore land prices increased. As the population density increases in the city centers, the necessities have increased in this direction and new needs have started to be formed. Multifunctional structures have emerged to meet all the needs of people. The buildings are functional according to the needs potential of people and the environment and serve not only the residents but also the environment. High rise buildings are buildings with a large human population and 7/24 living. High rise buildings consume more energy than traditional buildings. The increase in global warming and the decrease in natural resources have been a major factor for the ecological awareness of the people. Since people spend most of their lives indoors, the importance given to health and comfort in buildings has increased. In this respect, the sustainability of buildings and their impact on the environment is very important.
İzmir is a city center with its multifaceted economic activities and rich natural resources. Population density is increasing day by day and is a city that continues to develop socioeconomically. İzmir is an important center of attraction in the Aegean Region and the country with its logistics infrastructure, qualified human resources, multi-sector structure and high standard of living. These factors have caused the population density to increase day by day. A new city center has been established in order to meet the needs of people and to ensure that the center of İzmir is stuck as a result of the migrations, the roads and parking lots are insufficient for the city center. Bayraklı district has been a solution for meeting all these needs and relaxing transportation. High buildings constructed and designed in Bayraklı contribute to the city skyline. Furthermore, it plays an active role in eliminating the problems arising from the increase in population density. Problems arise when high-rise buildings start to be experienced during the project phase, implementation and building. Within the scope of these problems, the Mistral towers, which were built in İzmir and could serve as an example for the high rise buildings that will continue to be constructed, were discussed in this thesis. One of the most important objectives of this thesis is the impact of new buildings on the environment, energy-efficient structures and structures that give importance to human health and comfort. Another objective of the thesis is to provide sustainability in high-rise buildings, to minimize the damages to the environment, and to design and implement buildings where renewable energy is used at maximum level.
As a case study of the selected Mistral high-rise buildings, it was found that the contributions of high-rise buildings to the city can meet the needs of the environment. It is thought that the ecological balance can be prevented by the construction of such buildings. In line with the results obtained, it was determined that the costs spent in order to be sustainable structure during the project and implementation phase were recovered in a very short time and this information was aimed to contribute to the new high-rise buildings.

Thesis Title: ADAPTIVE REUSE OF SILO BUILDINGS WITH CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES
Author: Gökhan Murat Karamustafa
Year: 2020
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF. (PhD) N. Ebru KARABAĞ AYDENIZ
Contemporary interventions to the historical buildings are one of the most discussed issues in the field of conservation. On the one hand, contemporary intervention is desired to be compatible with the old structure in terms of scale, character, material, and on the other hand it is desired to use the materials and technology of its era in a conscious way. When these conditions are met, modern interventions help to enrich the social, functional and aesthetic character of the existing structure and to increase the value of the urban identity by branding. A number of principles and methods have been identified to interfere with the impact of experiences in the conceptual development process, with the contribution of the texts published by the theoreticians and international organizations. However, as the historical, cultural, urban / rural context and level of protection of each sample varies, appropriate intervention approaches also change.
According to the conservation theory that has been developing since the 19th century, structures that are important for human history should be preserved as they are. Designers are allowed to act more flexibly to more recent structures with interventions. Silos, which are modern monuments of industry, are one of these types of buildings. This type of building, developed starting from the second half of the 19th century, turned into giant concrete monuments in the 20th century. Nowadays, the examples that have remained dysfunctional have been destroyed or lost their identity through unqualified interventions. Whereas, even small-numbered examples show that this building has the potential to enrich the environment while meeting the functional needs of contemporary life.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to discuss through silo structures, how historical, environmental and contextual data should be used in the architectural design process in order to develop approaches regarding interventions to the existing structure. In this context, the expansions in the theoretical base which contain the principles of contemporary interventions are reviewed in a chronological order and the selected examples will be evaluated critically.

In modern architecture historiography, documentation and conservation of modern movement heritage are restricted to a certain period and/or building group. In this context, residential buildings are neglected except for the buildings by well-known architects and iconic examples. Moreover, interior studies related with these residential buildings are very few. However, the examination of residential buildings provides important clues about the transformation of urban patterns and daily life practices. Residential buildings reaching today are original examples conveying us the housing and living culture of the period. They are important identity components which carry the culture, art and civilization of society to the future.
The case study in this thesis addresses residential area in Karşıyaka-İzmir, which is experiencing both a rapid urban transformation and the threat of losing its distinctive modern characteristics. The study focuses on two of its neighborhoods -Aksoy and Donanmacı- and the period of 1950-1980. To be able to analyse these buildings in a holistic way, different methods were implemented throughout the study. One of them is, using modern housing heritage value system including tangible and intangible values for evaluating importance of residential architecture. With the help of the archive documents of the apartment buildings’ projects, plan layouts and interior space characteristics were also revealed. On the other hand, oral history method –based on interviews with occupants, former inhabitants and researchers. Through these analyses, housing/living culture and daily life of the period are investigated. It is aimed to make contribution to both architecture and interior design practices by revealing different actors in housing production and interpretation of the residential buildings as social objects.

It is known that, today, old population is increasing speedily in Turkey, as observed worldwide. According to the population projection studies conducted the Turkish Statistical Institute, the old population has increased by 17% in the last five years across Turkey. This projection indicates that attention is required for the needs and requests of the elderly, as much as it is needed for the welfare of the young population, as well as that these needs should be met properly. To enhance the life standards of the elderly, more innovative, functional and life-facilitating solutions should be come up with for the places where the elderly lives.
Within this context, the aim of this study is to obtain new data concerning the designs that fulfill their needs by means of properly analyzing elders’ transforming and changing physical, psychological and sociological states. Selected as the sample space study, since Buca Social Life Campus, Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a heterogeneous space where individuals of any age over 60 that are of any cultural and life-style background, and a social area where elders spend the most active time of all their times, its social areas are analyzed in terms of spatial features and interior design layouts. The data in the study has been obtained by means of literature review, observation and interviewing.
In conclusion, the literature review and the analyses conducted in the sample place reveal elders’ needs in social areas of nursing and rehabilitation centers. The study makes suggestions concerning the interior design arrangement of social areas and particularly use of furniture layouts in such places within the context of these needs.

Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF. (PhD) İLKER KAHRAMAN
People spent a lot of time indoors and the positive/negative effects of indoor air quality have been the subject of many studies. The positive effects of good indoor air quality on the employees in the offices were also supported and many studies were conducted to improve the indoor air quality. The effects of photosynthesis on the indoor carbon dioxide level is proved by the literature review, and in this context, the effect of microalgae on the indoor CO2 level was measured in an office in Yaşar University. Studies with microalgae are generally in laboratory environment or concept ideas, and the contribution of algae to indoor air quality has been lacking in terms of measurement by case analysis method. For this reason, this thesis is presented as a step to contribute to closing the gap in this subject and also to make many design alternatives in the future in interior spaces by using microalgae, depending on the results. This thesis was designed to measure the effects of two different microalgae types and quantities (80 L Spirulina sp. and 50 L Chlorella vulgaris mixtures) on indoor CO2 levels from the beginning of November 2018 until the end of March 2019 by considering the number of users and occupancy rate. Experiments were performed in two sections, and the results showed that the level of CO2 in the office was generally acceptable, but due to the lack of natural ventilation, users often complained of tiredness and headache. The effects of different types and amounts of microalgae on the CO2 level is resulted differently for two altered types. The reduction of the indoor CO2 levels with 80 L Spirulina sp. was measured as 1% on the workdays and 5% on weekends. At the same time, the amount of CO2 increase was slower than when there was no microalgae in the office. However, the results of the 50 L Chlorella vulgaris mixture is not enough to reduce the indoor CO2 level on workdays and weekends also.

The world population is increasing over the years. More and more natural resources are needed to meet the growing population needs. However, natural resources are limited and should be consumed wisely in order to be used in the following years. In this context, architects and engineers have great responsibility for the management of resources. It is their responsibility to provide adequate resources for future generations and to meet the needs of today. Therefore, the concept of sustainability has emerged over the years and has been one of the most emphasized issues today. Sustainability also has an important place in architectural design. Sustainable use of resources is supported by reducing energy use in buildings. Because people spend an important part of their time indoors. Most people are in office space during the daylight hours. In this thesis, an optimization study was carried out to reduce energy use in office buildings by using shading element. Shading elements, especially in the south facade of glass with solar radiation control by preventing overheating. In this study, the variables of the organic, triangular geometry shading element integrated into the southern façade are solved as a multi-objective optimization problem by the evolutionary algorithm which is HypE genetic algorithm. One of the two purposes of the problem is keeping the internal temperature of the glass between 20℃ and 27℃ for every hour of the year and the other is the minimum energy consumption for the interior lighting. The horizontal shading element and the flat triangular geometry shading element together with the shading element without the shading element have been studied and compared for the performance evaluation of this proposed organic triangular geometry shading element. Firstly, the shading element and without energy simulation of the test geometry for each shading element was modeled in the “Grasshopper”, which is an add-on of Rhinoceros, and the variables “Ladybug Honeybee” were identified in its program. The “Octopus” Grasshopper plug-in connects the prepared variables to give a two-dimensional optimization problem “pareto front” based result set. The results are evaluated by selecting from the group. The evaluation criteria are the operative temperature, the indoor temperature, the energy obtained from the total sunlight. As a summary, three main issues have been concluded. First it is seen that which type has better performance which is organic, triangular based geometry. Secondly, Shading device geometry can be found with generative model via evolutionary algorithms. It is shown one more time that evolutionary algorithms are applicable to complicated architectural problems. At least, in the evaluating phase of the shading devices, a new metric which is surface temperature metric is referred in the study. The success of the new metric is a good comparing element for the study and the metric may help the further studies in the literature.

Thesis Title: CONTEMPORARY RE-EVOLUTION OF TRADITIONAL MOSQUE ARCHITECTURE IN IRAN
Author: ELNAZ BARRY
Year: 2018
Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF. (PhD) NAĞME EBRU AYDENİZ
This study considers the architectural characteristics of mosques in Iran from the initial date of constructing to the contemporary ones. Iranian architecture is one of the world’s reputable architectures. It was one of the most significant architectures in the medieval Islamic world. Iranian architecture has expanded over millenary in reply to its religion. All traditional and indigenous Mosques in Iran exhibit that their architects had been so bright in coordinating Iranian religion and architecture in the past. The selected cases are outstanding examples of contemporary mosques in Iran. Five modern mosques in various cities of the country were determined and evaluated as case studies. Their architects are innovative in their design intention and demonstrate their own project approach and explanation outside the mainstream of contemporary mosque design in Iran. Different aspects like material, plan, construction method, design and other features are considered in this thesis. For this purpose both qualitative and participant-observation were used as a research method. On this basis, this study indicates that Iran, as a country with rich and unique architecture, unfortunately does not benefit the contemporary methods in mosque architecture because of public beliefs and government’s policies.

The need for new construction has led to radical demolition of vernacular and historic buildings. Furthermore, to meet contemporary needs in construction, vernacular buildings have been abandoned despite their simplicity, inheritance of historic values and resistance to seismic actions (as seen in some buildings around the world). In South-Western Nigeria (the Yoruba area of the country), many palaces have been abandoned and are out of use after the demise of the king that occupied them. This is prominent in Ibadan. Having investigated the conditions of two palaces in this study – Aleshinloye and Aare Latoosa Palaces – adaptive reuse was suggested to rehabilitate and rejuvenate them while putting together the main content of the three adaptive reuse theories of technical, typological and strategic approaches. This paper reviews the literatures on adaptive reuse of historical buildings and suggests a method of adaptation. It also emphasizes a major advantage of prolonging the useful life of all vernacular buildings by reusing them for a purpose that will benefit the locals. The interviews held during investigation revealed the importance of several historic elements in the palaces and a restoration project was suggested so that these elements are retained and/or redesigned so as to maintain the historic value of the palaces. The study exploits the potentials of the abandoned palaces, suggested possible adaptive reuse that suits their structural conditions. Furthermore it reveals that maintaining and reusing these palaces could uplift the historic value and heritage landscape of the community with social, economic and other historic benefits.

Down the centuries human beings produced local architectural patterns in compatibility with their lifestyles by taking into account the socio-cultural structures, environmental factor (climate, vegetation, geographical position etc.) and local materials. Architecture is a trace of culture and history representing the past of the humanity. Local houses are the elements providing the possibility to sustain the local socio-economic structure and history. These houses are the buildings organized by public with original plan typologies and constructions systems on the basis of respect to nature and human being. That’s why vernacular architecture plays the lodestar role towards the future. In the rural areas the local houses were built by owners in a modest way by using local materials in compatibility with cultural and socio-economic structures.
In the regions undergoing evolution and transformation, the local and regional housing entities are being diminished as time passes. The houses started to lose their original architectural values and their interior space elements. The local houses are being replaced with monotone buildings distant from the socio-cultural texture of the locality. In order to ensure the continuity of the common consciousness of the society the local elements should be documented, protected and sustained. Within the context of those problems a place under the threat of extinction of the local housing characteristics was chosen for the study. The subject of this study is the Inner Castle Houses in the Quarter Sığacık of the Seferihisar District. In the Sığacık Inner Castle area a street facade sanitization project was applied after the Cittaslow title was granted to Seferihisar and activities to modify the functions of the houses were started. This thesis aims to review out those activities by revealing the sustainability of the social and cultural texture of the Inner Castle area and the compatibility with interior structures of the local houses. This study tries to determine the relation between the socio-cultural and local texture of Inner Castle settlement and the design of the interior spaces of the local houses. Another purpose of the thesis is to find out the local architecture features and the interior space elements of the houses of Sığacık Inner Castle area and to make contribution to the activities trying to ensure the cultural sustainability of the houses.
The analysis of the selected houses and evaluations of the findings enabled to understand the interior spaces of houses better. It is expected that obtained results provide some support to the sustainability of the cultural elements which making the buildings meaningful. Thus, it is targeted to make some contribution to the accumulation of the long past which is needed to shape the future.

Author: SALOME KOLO
Year: 2017
Thesis Advisor: ASSOC.PROF. (PhD) GÜLNUR BALLİCE
This thesis examines the approach of modern architecture and/or modernism in the modern housing interiors. When the term modernism is mentioned in architecture, it is looked at from the structural aspect or the building shell. Discussing modernism in interior design has not been comprehensively covered and as such, this study attempts to make connections between modernism and the housing interior. The course of this study thoroughly examines how the principles that relate to modernism, which are being applied to any architectural design, have been reflected into interior design.
Eight cases were selected for this research, which will be the focus of study as examples of single-family housing, spanning between the 1920s and 1950s, which are located both in Europe and the United States of America. These two geographies are considered important in the discourse of modernism as they set the foundation for modern architecture. Apart from literature review on modernism, modern housing and specific characteristics of the era, the case studies have been carefully studied by analyzing their interior design characteristics, by means of colored interior images. The criteria selected in this study for analyzing the modern housing interiors are plan layout, materials, furniture, and colors of interior elements. These criteria are considered as major or most influential characteristics of interior design, which reflect interior design approach completely.
This research also aims at establishing a better understanding on how modernist design principles transcend into other fields and for the purpose of this study, interior design. It also shows the progression of the modern housing interior as the century evolved, creating domestic interiors that were a reflection of the growth of the modern era and modernity concerning the lives of the people. The case study houses are compared with each other according to their respective eras as regards design approach in plan layout, materials, furniture and interior colors. This is made as an indication to determine how the modern interior advanced through these two different geographies.
It is aimed that this study will serve as a means to encourage designers to appreciate housing interiors and to examine the principles or ideologies that give them meaning, providing knowledge concerned with shaping the future.

Abstract: As hospitals are functionally complex structures, hospital users – patient, relatives and staff – are in a stressful mood for different reasons. Because of the crowd, patients and their relatives can stay in waiting areas for a long time. It is important that the physical environment they are in during this expectation does not give them any additional stress. As a result of the researches and observations made, it has been found that this stress and tension have declined positively in places where full conformity to human needs is mentioned. At this point, the prominence of interior quality emerges.
This thesis evaluates the quality of clinic waiting areas and their user expectations. It concentrates on their human-based designs and their physical and psychological impact on users. Two equivalent state hospitals were selected as the study area since 2010, selected hospitals are state hospitals with similar capacities, similar characteristics and in the general hospital category. The most significant difference between these hospitals is the positioning and functioning of the outpatient waiting areas in the plan. While the waiting area in Tire State Hospital is divided for each outpatient clinic, there are common waiting areas at Çeşme State Hospital. Comparisons between these areas have been made in order to examine in more detail the effect of this different scheme on users. As a comparative method, post-use evaluation method was applied and literature survey and observation were done in addition to data collection by questionnaire.
In addition to comparing the plan layout of the two outpatient clinic outpatient clinics, the concepts of orientation and confidentiality/limitations with interior components such as materials, color/texture, lighting/visual comfort, ventilation, acoustic/visual comfort, furniture, it was investigated. It has been found that there are some differences between the two hospitals in terms of acoustic comfort, privacy, natural lighting and ventilation resulting from the differentiation of the scheme.
At the first stage, the literature was searched and related subjects were investigated. Then visits to the hospitals were made for observation, photographs and preliminary surveys and a questionnaire was applied to the users in the waiting area to identify the main problems. Through questionnaires, the physical and psychological needs of users and aesthetic pleasures were questioned under the headings of security, privacy, ergonomics and hygiene. According to the results, the effects of the space on the users have been determined. The main objective of this study is therefore related to the augmentation of space satisfaction in waiting halls of state hospital clinics.
It is hoped that the design suggestions formulated will help increase awareness of those concerned with the design of such interior spaces. At the end of the research, suggestions were made to select appropriate plan schemes for the waiting areas, to improve the indoor quality and to increase the satisfaction with the space.

Beginning of 20th century, creative drama teaching techniques as a training perception was initiated to use foremost in England and USA. In an inadequate education environment, the creative drama became widespread to fulfill the requirements of the era. In the dramatic training, which student exists more actively
with the principle of learning by doing and living, acquirements are gained such as “creativity, ability of critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills, development of imagination and awareness level, group planning in individuals, cooperation within a group and ability to create new solutions”. Creative drama teaching method previously used in other disciplines in design teaching. The performance evaluation of these applications proved that creative drama boosts the efficient teaching environment. In this research, effects of targeted attainments provided by basic design studios’ education are examined via basic design studios which are supported by creative drama activities providing similar attainments instead of methods in traditional design studios. In this direction, experimental studies which are designed and applied by the researcher are used as a method. With experimental studies, students’ more active participation to learning process and more productive and more understandable transfer of design issues by supporting them with creative drama activities and in this direction, a more successful design process experience is targeted. Global warming which we have begun to experience significantly over the past few decades have many more reasons. Because of the global warming studies regarding energy efficiency both in our country and in the world are getting increasingly more important.
Hospitals are buildings that consume major energy in various areas such as heating, cooling and lighting. This study was conducted considering these hospital building groups due to the increase in the importance of the energy efficiency in the hospitals both in the world and in our country.
Energy at building envelope, cost, and environmental studies were conducted in this study. Therefore, low cost and reduced energy consuming outer wall model was established by minimizing the environmental effects through establishing the conditions and inputs for a comfortable indoor condition for people/patients with minimum energy consumption.
Depending on the proper construction, TS 825 Thermal Insulation Standard specifies maximum annual energy demand which covers topics such as heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water and lighting. However, in order to provide energy conversation by the building envelope, there is a specific heat transmission coefficient value or U value. Heat transmission coefficient (U) for the city of Izmir was determined as U≤0,70 according to TS 825 Thermal Insulation Standard. It is possible to obtain many details that would procure the U value. Therefore in this study, 24 different details were established within the context of a dissertation in order to provide the minimum U-values which would result in minimum values for building envelope. Consequently, initial investment costs and environmental impacts of each of the details differ.
Material thickness regarding the U value was established by using TS 825 Thermal Insulation program while wall model was created. Providing thermal comfort and being one of the major application fields, thermal insulation was focused on building envelope by examining the environmental impacts with life cycle analyses (LCA) conducted on Simapro program.
An exterior insulation focused, energy effective, cost-effective and environment-friendly wall model was created in this study. The aim is to support the decision-makers by shedding light on the issues that are currently being underrated by the decision-makers and encouraging the consideration of the environmental impact and cost of the building envelope’s material selection.

Housing units of the Post-Republican Period, which preserve most of their daily use components, are noteworthy sources for the history of Turkish architecture, interior design and industrial design. These modern dwellings contain a variety of production goods, materials and elements. It must be understood that they are also final products of qualified design manners. These buildings are usually low density buildings. Transformation of the housing stock on a plot basis increased in Turkey with the enactment of the Urban Transformation Law in the year of 2012. It can be seen that housing units of the Post-Republican Period are pretty desirable and profitable for urban transformation activities, when it is considered their features and rental values. This transformation process is unsafe that it is damaging the history of architecture, interior and industrial design. In order to minimize its undesirable consequences, it becomes significant to ascertain, document and interpret certain buildings, although they may have completed their economic lives. This thesis aims to document and interpret a sample of such housing in Karşıyaka between the years 1948 and 1965. This is necessary in order to maintain a continuous history of architecture and design which is a significant ingredient of our cultural and social life. This thesis evaluates possibilities of a documenting and interpreting components of Turkish architecture, interior and industrial design in order to save their legacy.
Thesis Title: THE EFFECT OF DESIGN CONSITUTING SUSTAINABILITY CONSCIOUSNESS IN KINDERGARTEN

Thesis Advisor: ASSIST.PROF. (PhD) EBRU ALAKAVUK
Usually when it is said ‘kindergarten period” it is understood one or two years before the children start school. Kindergarten term is used mostly for 3-6 years old children that are educated on well-arranged programme in institutions. In the widest sense the kindergarten period starts with the birth of a child and continuous until the child starts basic education. In this study will be discussed in detail the effect of design constituting sustainability consciousness in kindergarten.
If this study want to describe the sustainability not just according to architecture but generally; fulfilling the needs of today according to possible future demands, using the resources effectively, not harming the environment, recycling the waste and we can summarize this to leave livable world for the future generations. Educators are paying high attention on awareness and consciousness for establishing sustainability, and are suggesting “education for sustainability” for children before school to establish this kind of point of view.
In this thesis we researched the principles to enhance the sustainable buildings. In this study, after mentioning the importance of sustainability in education, we studied the important subjects in kindergarten design such as using the natural light, heating, cooling, air conditioning, wind power, not wasting water and material selection. Also criticize the world for not paying enough attention to sustainable buildings; although there are recently some improvements in Turkey, but there have to be more implementation and research regarding to sustainable buildings. Another goal is to provide extra source for sustainable kindergarten designs.

Abstract: The main concern with contemporary architecture in Persia is in the fact that it is losing its ancient architectural identity which contained Islamic architectural motives alongside Persia’s rich traditions and architecture.Traditional architecture was designed according to culture and climate. Old Persian architecture had a reason behind every feature used in its architectural buildings, whereas contemporary buildings do not own these characteristics. Today’s architecture has lost its foundamental values and it no longer holds to its traditions and identity. Looking at today’s architectual ornamentation and comparing them with traditional architecture we witness that traditional ornaments and decorations once used in ancient Persian architecture has been forgotten. The aim of this study is to research traditional architecture in order to form a framework that can benefit contemporary architecture. Thus today’s architecture can inspire from the beneficial, intelligent traditional architecture and find its identity again. To reach this goal, traditional houses are good examples, since we can study the reasons behind every feature used in their architecture. Therefore five traditional houses of Qajar period were chosen in Kashan city of Isfahan Province to be studied thoroughly with the focus being on their, Mirror Work, Stucco Work, Mural Paintings and Orosi Windows.

Algeria as a country of 2,381,741 square kilometers has three different climate zones respectively: Mediterranean, semi-arid and arid, in its three different regions: Northern, Central and Southern. Each region has developed its typical vernacular tradition; one that responded to climate, topography and life style. Following modernization and westernization of the country since one hundreds of years, traditional building practices started to be abandoned, leading to a radical transformation of the built environment. The current situation of the urban environment depends only on reinforced concrete construction that does not respond to the country’s regional variety as it disregards nature, climate and lifestyles of many. This study explores the vernacular building types from the two geographical regions of the country; Casbah (Mediterranean) and M’zab (arid) in order to understand their sustainable architectural design strategies; their own responses to climate, and their fit with the people’s lifestyle. The aim is to evaluate the degree of sustainability achieved on those traditional building practices. This will be concluded first by knowing the architectural design principles which should be in a building in order to call it sustainable. This research helps to understand more about the architectural heritage of Algeria. It gives us a clear knowledge on design strategies of traditional houses in the two regions according to the climate, lifestyle, and local available materials. The findings show that, both case studies have precious sustainable methods, and powerful in the most sustainable criteria, when it comes to the three standards of sustainability: economy of resources, life cycle design, and design for humane comfort. These might be useful for designers and architects in using those sustainable strategies in their new building projects.

Abstract: As buildings remain insufficient in the face of social and cultural developments and fall short of satisfying daily needs, they are abandoned, become decrepit, and even demolished. Thus, these buildings have to be renovated and re-functioned. There is a great stock of buildings which have lost their functions both within Turkey and the world, and many are waiting to be re-functioned. For these buildings to be utilized correctly and get re-functioned, planning is a necessity .Renovation and re-functioning applications on historic buildings are becoming more prevalent in Turkey. Just as in many developed countries; their importance within the architectural practice is increasing. Therefore the quality of their design and application is getting more crucial. Re-functioning projects and applications must preserve the value of historic buildings, while a new design enriches the building without damaging these values. Historical continuity can only be achieved in this manner. As an extension of modern preservation understanding, the renovated intervention methods (conservation, restoration, re-functioning, etc) varies depending on many different parameters. A sustainable re-functioning cannot be achieved in buildings that have lost their values and those which are not functioned properly, thus making these buildings idle. It is an interesting fact that recent foreign functioning efforts adopt the “Experience Economy Model” developed by Pine and Gilmore. This approach makes an efficient and effective evaluation of the variable parameters in the functioning process.

Abstract: Due to the rapid development of the world, utilizing energy resources in an efficient way becomes one of the most controversial topics in today’s area. In the light of this not only using alternative renewable energy resources but also consuming overall energy efficiently should be considered. As most of our lives continue in closed environments, such as factories, offices and residential areas, efficient energy consumption in buildings plays a great role in this aspect. From this point of view both architecture and interior architecture try to propose various solutions to the problem such as using waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency and indoor air quality in accepted levels.
Considering these facts, this thesis focuses on one of the weakest links in efficient energy consumption as existed hotels due to high amount circulation. During this thesis, after describing the precautions that should be taken in buildings to reduce energy and water consumption, to improve waste management and indoor air quality in one of the biggest hotel chains in Turkey, “Gural Premier Tekirova” will be analyzed with respect to the related date received from the Hotel officials and solutions are proposed to improver sustainability measures.

Globalization and competitive market strategies in Turkey since 1980s accelerated construction sector and brought gated communities into our lives. Gated communities were criticized to cause incoherence in the social structure despite the high demand especially in major cities of Turkey. This study aims to gain insight on the phenomena and popularity of gated communities in İzmir, from the perspective of gated community residents. The theory of place attachment is used to generate a theoretical framework for this study which is supported by literature research. Place attachment is a psychological well-being in the proximity of a place. The literature research points out three approaches on place attachment: identity, dependence and affection. Socio-demographic characteristics can affect the strength of attachment and place attachment motivates people to behave more responsible towards their environments. A survey questionnaire was conducted in Soyak Mavişehir to determine the profile of attached residents; the significance of place attachment aspects and the consequences of place attachment in gated communities. Statistical analysis found that 58 out of 100 residents of the sample are above the mean of attachment score (3.39 out of 5) however none of the socio-demographic characteristics is related to the strength of attachment. Affection is a significant indicator of attachment while the comparability of activities is not significant. The thesis concludes that place attachment in gated communities is not productive but consumptive practices of everyday life. Following the results and discussions some recommendations for the future studies is also presented.

Our cultural heritage, which inevitably has been facing the danger of extinction as a result of rapid urbanization after 1950, has document value by epitomizing life styles of the periods witnessed. This document value, carried by historical houses reflect the social, economic and cultural life of the society to space, is a set of values which transfer information to the next generations. They also reflect the social, cultural and economic life of the environment involved, within the discourse of universal protection. Despite this importance, our historical buildings could not reach up to the present due to the demand of people to transit from a traditional lifestyle to a modern one. It is also due to the fact that many of these structures were made with much weaker materials than those of today. Kula, with its historical urban texture and traditional residential architecture, allows us to find information about the traditional Turkish Houses of the 18th and 19th century. This district, today has up to about 900 registered structures bear a significant value when compared to it counterparts in Anatolia, acts like a mirror that provides information about the past conditions of life, construction materials, customs and traditions of the society. The reflections of these structures allow us to obtain information about the construction technology, handcrafts and decorations of the period. Within the scope of this thesis, closets allow us to obtain information about the architectural approach, building materials and techniques, decoration concepts and detailed solutions of the period were examined in the case of Kula. Wooden artisanship construction methods and decorations were studied in detail. In order to transfer to future generations, photos, building surveys and inventories were carried out. These will help to preserve the closets in these rooms without losing their originality. Up to the present no work has not been done on this subject. Modern design can only be better with knowledge in the past. Therefore the construction of our design heritage gain significance. This study examined traditional house closets and tried to extract clues for our present day design and practice.

Thesis Advisor: ASSIST. PROF.(PhD) ERAY BOZKURT
When people enter a building, they expect to see way finding elements, during way finding period, they need a guidance to decide which path or route to follow at next stage. To ease this way finding period, cognitive or mental map of the space will provide valuable information. During the design stage, the building’s designer can improve the cognitive map of the context by developing necessary design strategies. Since today’s architectural design of the healthcare buildings has undergone vast amount of changes, past experiences indicate that interior design is the most crucial factor in the hospital setting. Especially, the hospitals in which no Way finding Strategies and Cognitive Mapping System are set off may cause the patients and/or visitors to experience some difficulties while deciding the route to reach a target location. Due to different selective of perceptions, people differ in cognition of place and sub places with an impact of age and gender. Way finding failures in the building enhance navigational breakdowns. For this purpose, considering the way finding problems, usage of affective way finding elements and human spatial cognition is studied within the case study of Aegean University Polyclinics.

Thesis Advisor: ASSIST. PROF. (PhD) GÜLNUR BALLİCE
The research explores the theoretical possibility of a semiotic approach to the analysis of roofs, seen as entities where a process of communication and signification takes place – focusing on the consequences and the determination of the interior architectural functions of roofs, at their semantic and pragmatic levels. It aims proposing a new disciplinary look to roofs, developing “Semiotics of Liveable Roofs” as a theoretical background and a tool for understanding roofs as “semiotic spaces” acting in the cultural process through their communicative actions. This study also includes two different case studies, (AKA Central Park Hotel and The Living Roof/ Capsule sur le toit) through which the challenging design process of blending two contradictory features (exterior vs. interior) is examined. Depending on the given case studies, a comprehensive and comparative investigation of the transformation of an exterior space (Roof) into an interior one (Hotel Bedroom) allows us to address the analysis of liveable roofs between and within several oppositional pairs; closed vs. open; conventional vs. innovative; pragmatic vs. utopian; adapting vs. new; responsive vs. autonomous.

In architecture, the concept of design in the contemporary sense first appeared in 1920s by the emergence of modernism. Previous approaches were completely traditional and individual. By the emergence and the development of modernism, a theoretical and international approach in design was adopted for the first time. In the history of architecture, many examples inspired by the nature can be observed. Through the industrial revolution and advancements in technology the observations in nature diversified and branched into several fields. The contemporary movements developed afterwards were conceptually established on the foundations of modernism. Following this era in the beginning of the 20th century, the new materials, and construction techniques emerged by the advancements in technology besides the socio-economic developments and competition in Europe resulted in significant changes in architecture and design. From this era to present day in addition to many pioneering countries in Europe, Scandinavian designs influenced the movements significantly. This thesis study focuses on the effect of nature on Scandinavian design in the modernism era and on designs of Finish architect Alvar Aalto who is one of the pioneers of the era.
